Softball: Raiders Swept Otterbein in OAC Opener

WESTERVILLE, Ohio-- The University of Mount Union softball team swept Otterbein in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener-- 9-3 and 8-3-- Saturday.

The Purple Raiders advance to 9-5 on the season and 2-0 in the OAC as Otterbein falls to 3-10 and 0-2 in the OAC.

In game one, Mount Union got on the board early in the game as sophomore Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) earned an RBI sending a single to left field driving in freshman Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) who reached on a fielder's choice.

Otterbein tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first as Bailey McElwain sent a home run over the fence.

Mount Union regained the lead in the top of the fifth after a trio of singles by freshman Shelby VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville), junior Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) and senior Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) moved the bases earning a 2-1 lead.

Otterbein again tied the game 2-2 with three singles of their own driving a runner home.

The Purple Raiders put the game away in the top of the sixth scoring six runs off of two home runs. Sophomore Brooke Cox (Louisville/Lousiville) drove in two runs hitting her second home run of the season to double the Raider lead-- 4-2.

Sophomore Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) drove in the next three runs hitting her second home run of the season as the Raiders went up 8-2 over the Cardinals.

Otterbein posed a rally in the sixth hitting another home run but was not enough to overcome the Raiders who went on to claim game one, 9-3.

Junior Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field) earned the win on the mound advancing to 4-3 on the year.

In game two, the Raiders trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth before three home runs in an eight-run sixth inning earned Mount Union the 8-3 lead.

Baitt hit the first home run driving in two runs followed by junior Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa/Pine-Richland) hitting one over the fence sending two more runs home.

Two batters later, A. VanSickle earned two RBI's hitting the Raiders third home run and final run of the game for either team as the Raiders went on to sweep Otterbein 8-3.

Earning the win on the mound was Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) advancing to 2-2 on the season.

Mount Union has a quick turnaround as they host a double header with the Walsh Cavaliers tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 22 at 1 and 3 pm at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
