Softball: Mount Union Splits a Pair of Games with Case Western Reserve

ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games with Case Western Reserve Wednesday, March 23 at 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders rallied for a 9-7 win in the first game then lost 10-6 in a second game shortened by darkness which makes them 12-8 on the season while Case Western Reserve is now 10-14.

In game one, Mount Union scored the first run of the game with an RBI single from Andi Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) in the bottom of the first. Case Western tied the game up in the top of the second off an RBI ground out.

The Raiders went up 6-1 on the Spartans with an RBI single from Brooke Cox (Louisville/Louisville) in the bottom of the second and four runs in the bottom of the fourth off a solo home run from Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick), an RBI triple from Jordan Tull (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and a two-run home run from Brittany Baitt (Painsville/Riverside).

Case Western Reserve scored two runs in the top of the fifth to close the deficit to 6-3 but Mount Union came back and got those runs back in the bottom half of the frame on a Jordan Hall (Lorain / Magnificat) single and an RBI ground out from Tull to lead 8-3.

The Spartans attempted another rally in the sixth with four runs to close the gap to 8-7 and had the bases loaded before pitcher Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) came out of the bull pen for Mount Union and got the final out.

The Raiders got an insurance run in the top of the seventh off as Vansickle singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on an error then Scali worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh to pick up her first save of the season. 

Erin Simmons (Suffied/Field) got the win in the circle for Mount Union and improved to 6-1 on the season. 

In game two, Mount Union took the lead in the bottom of the first with a wild pitch from Case Western Reserve but the Spartans would get two runs in the top of the third to lead the Raiders 2-1.

The Raiders responded with three runs in the bottom of the third as Vansickle doubled in a run and Jessica Kennedy (Beach City/Fairless) brought in two with a triple to give Mount Union back the lead at 4-2.

The Spartans then scored a run the fourth and three more in the fifth to retake the lead, 6-4.

Mount Union tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Vansickle and Calhoun each drove in runs.

Case Western Reserve then scored a run in sixth and three in the seventh to push the score to 10-6 before the game was stopped due to darkness.

Mount Union hosts Baldwin Wallace Friday at 1 p.m. in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener at 23rd Street Field
