Softball: Raider Split a Pair of Games on First Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games on the first day of competition in Clermont, Florida.

Mount Union (1-1) was defeated by the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 10-3, in its first game of the season. The Purple Raiders then rallied from the loss to defeat Wheaton (Ill.), 4-2, in the last game of the day.  

Against MSOE (5-4), both teams did not score in the first three innings. MSOE then went on a five run streak in the top of the bottom of the third. Mount Union led off the top of the fourth with a base hit from Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick) who later scored off a single from Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville).

The Raiders got two more runs on RBI hits from Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne) and Hanna Reusser (Minerva/Minvera) in the fourth to close the gap to 5-3 but Franklin would blow the game open with five more runs.  

In the circle, Reusser took the loss as she allowed 10 runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Against Wheaton, Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) won her first game of the season as she threw a complete game, five-hit, and nine strikeouts to defeat Wheaton 4-2.

Scali got help from the offense with 4 runs on 10 hits. Mount Union scored in the first and fourth innings as Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) doubled to center field to get a run in the first inning. Mount Union got three more runs on RBI hits from Brooke Cox (Louisville/Lousiville) and Brittany Baitt (Riverside/Painsville) as they defeated Wheaton.

Mount Union plays tomorrow against Roanoke (Va.) at 9:00 a.m. and Alfred (N.Y.) at 11:30 a.m.
