ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Ohio Northern Saturday afternoon in Alliance, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders (11-13, 5-3 OAC) dropped the first game in 12 innings 7-6 to come back and take the second game, 9-5.
In game one, Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) took the loss as she pitched 12 innings allowing seven runs on 14 hits with nine strikeouts. Scali falls to 4-8 on the season.
Ohio Northern started off the game with one run in the top of the first. The Raiders answered to the Polar Bears with a three hit first inning, as freshman Morgan Riley (Charleoi, Pa./Charleoi) singled through the right side driving in junior Brittany Baitt (Painsville/Riverside) who singled up the middle on her first at bat making it a tied game, 1-1.
Another three hit inning for Mount Union got them two runs as senior Brooke Cox (Louisville/Louisville) and Scali each drove in a run as the Raiders led the Polar Bears 3-1.
A big fourth inning for the Polar Bears gave them a 4-3 lead over the Raiders. Senior Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) doubled to right center for an RBI with Riley getting another RBI for the Raiders pushing to get a 5-4 lead back.
Ohio Northern answered to Mount Union's with a two run homerun to get their lead back, 6-5. The Raiders didn't give up as another double ran in Baitt Lehman to tie the game up at 6-6 and push it into extra innings.
After four scoreless extra innings, the Polar Bears scored the first run in the top of the 12th off of two hits. The Raiders had two hits in the bottom of the 12th, but could not drive in a run as Ohio Northern took the first game, 7-6.
In the second game, the Polar Bears scored the first run again in the top of the first. Baitt got the bottom of the first going with a triple up the middle as freshman Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) drove her in for the Raiders first run of the game.
Junior Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick) singled to right center driving in two Raiders to lead the Polar Bears 3-1.
Mount Union blew up the second inning driving in six more runs in the bottom of the second with Baitt, Riley, Calhoun, Cox, Scali, and junior Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) each getting an RBI to lead Ohio Northern 9-1.
Two runs in the top of the fourth, including a home run, and one in the top of the sixth for the Polar Bears put the score at 9-4, with the Raiders in the lead.
The Polar Bears scored one more run in the top of the seventh, but couldn't catch up to the Raiders as Mount Union won 9-5.
On the mound, freshman Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) pitched seven innings as she allowed five runs on 10 hits and had one strikeout. Reusser is now 7-5 on the season.
Mount Union hosts Hiram Sunday, April 9 at 1:00 and 3:00 PM at 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio
