Softball: Mount Union Splits a Pair of Games With Hiram Sunday Afternoon

ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games to non-conference opponent Hiram Sunday afternoon in Alliance, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders (12-14) had 10 runs on 13 hits in the first game defeating the Terriers 10-0 but fell to Hiram in extra innings 10-9 in the second game.

Mount Union started the first game off strong with three runs in the bottom of the first. Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) singled through the left side driving in Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) and Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) as Brooke Cox (Lousiville/Louisville) double to left center driving in Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick).

The Raiders blew up the fourth inning as Lehman started off the inning with a homerun.  A single up the middle by Hannah Reusser (Minvera/Minerva) and a single to right field from Baitt drove in four Raiders putting the score at 10-0.

On the mound, Reusser pitched got the win as she pitched four innings only allowing five runs. Reusser improves to 7-5 on the season.

Sam DeAnda (Gibsonburg/Gibsonburg) finished out the game on the mound for the Raiders to take the first game from the Terriers 10-0.

In the second game, Mount Union drove in the first run with a single from Morgan Riley (Charleoi, Pa./Charleoi).

Hiram got a 3-1 lead over Mount Union driving in one run in the first and two in the third. The Raiders tied the game up in the fourth as a Cox triple and an Anna Saxton (Boardman/Boardman) single drove in two runs.

Another two run inning for the Terries, including a homerun from Shaylene Call, pushed Hiram back in the lead, 5-3.

A three-run homerun from Mackenzie Dombrowski gave the Terriers an 8-3 lead over the Raiders in the bottom of the fifth.

Mount Union could not get a run in the fifth or sixth inning but a single through the left side by Riley in the seventh drove in two Raiders as Mount Union got within three runs of Hiram, 8-5.

Saxton hit a three-run homerun, her first collegiate homerun, to tie the game 8-8. Hiram could not get a run in the bottom of the seventh pushing it into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) singled up the middle pushing Jordan Hall (Lorain/Magnificat) to third. A Kramer bunt made the bases loaded with no outs. Two outs at home and a pop up to the center field with bases loaded pushed us to the bottom with no runs.

Hiram popped up into a double play to the line out to Cox. Cox then drove Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) in to get a 9-8 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Terriers tied it back up at 9-9 with a double to left field from Nikki Budner. Hiram got the 10-9 win with a bunt single by Dana Perrotta.

DeAnda pitched 6.1 innings as she allowed eight runs on 11 hits. Reusser pitched the last two innings taking the loss allowing two runs on three hits and falling to 7-6 on the season.

Mount Union travels to University Heights to take on the John Carroll Blue Streaks Tuesday, April 11 at 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
