MINNEOLA, Fla. - Mount Union's softball team dropped a pair of game on their first day of competition in the PFX Spring Games in Florida.
The Purple Raiders (0-2) were defeated by Southwestern (Tex.), 6-3, in the first game of the season and then 9-6 by Houghton (N.Y.).
Against Southwestern (7-4), Mount Union came out swinging hard scoring three runs in the first inning with RBIs from freshmen Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) and Margaret Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic). The Raiders were unable to score after the opening inning as Southwestern went on to score six late runs to win the game.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) falls to 0-1 in her season opener with six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
In game two against Houghton (2-8), Mount Union struck first once again off a two-run homerun from sophomore Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi). Houghton would also score a run in the first inning to make it 2-1 before scoring six runs in the third inning. The Raiders would try and rally back by scoring three runs off RBIs from Riley and Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva), but Houghton would get two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, winning the game 9-6.
Senior Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) takes the loss in her Mount Union pitching debut with seven runs on seven hits and two walks.
Mount Union will next play Bridgewater State (Mass.) and Penn State-Brandywine in a 9:00/11:30 a.m. doubleheader at Leesburg, Florida.
