LEESBURG, Fla. – The Mount Union softball team split a pair of games on day two at the PFX Spring Games at Sleepy Hollow Recreation Complex.
Mount Union (1-3) defeated Bridgewater State (Mass.) (1-2) 7-4, securing their first win of the season, and fell to Catholic (D.C.) (3-0) 8-3.
Against Bridgewater, sophomore pitcher Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) got her first win of the season in seven innings pitched with four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Cheyenne Miller's (Salem/West Branch) RBI single got the Raiders on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Three runs off RBIs from Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) and Brooklyn Hellman (Canton/Jackson) put Mount Union up 4-0. Bridgewater would get back-to-back two-run innings but could not hold Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) off as she hit a deep two-run homerun to make it 7-4.
In game two, Catholic opened with a two-run homer but Mount Union answered right back with two runs of their own with RBIs from Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) and Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) tying the game at 2-2 through four innings. Mount Union ran into trouble as Catholic hit a pair of two-run homeruns in the bottom of the fourth, going up 6-2 and then tabbed two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Riley hit her second homerun of the day in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 8-3.
Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) received the loss in her pitching debut as she gave up six runs in seven hits and three homeruns.
Mount Union continues their Florida campaign against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) and Franklin (Ind.) at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4 in Minneola, Fla.
