CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team defeated Monmouth (Ill.) and Carthage (Wis.) Wednesday afternoon at Hancock Park.
Against Monmouth (4-4), lead-off batter Brooklyn Hellman (Canton/Jackson) got the offense going as she singled and then was able to score at the end of the inning off a passed ball. Scoring on both sides went silent for a few innings until three RBI singles from Hellman, Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) and Cheyenne Miller (Salem/West Branch) would put Mount Union ahead 4-0 after five innings.
A solo home run by Monmouth got them on the board in the top of the sixth, but the Raiders answered with four runs to close out the game with a win at 8-1.
From the circle, Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) moves her record to 3-2 as she only allowed one run off five hits with six strikeouts.
Against Carthage (2-6), Mount Union struck first once again with an RBI single from Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside), scoring Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi). Riley followed up two innings later with a two-run home run to center field sending herself and Baitt home to be ahead 3-1. As the sixth batter of the innings, Shelby Vansickle's (Loudonville/Loudonville) RBI single got Goldy across ome plate giving the Raiders a 4-1 advantage midway through the third inning.
Starting pitcher Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) ran into trouble when Carthage scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game. After getting out of inning, RBIs from Baitt and Riley in the top of the fourth put Mount Union back on top, looking to secure the win and keep Carthage from coming back.
A solo home run for Carthage made it 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth as Tull would then be relieved by Reusser.
Fielding errors by Carthage combined with more RBIs from Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva), Anna Saxton (Boardman/Boardman) and Goldy pushed Mount Union's lead to 11-5 and Carthage was unable to come back. Vansickle aided the shut-down of Carthage's offense with 10 putouts at first base.
Tull would get the win to become 1-2 on the year as she allowed five runs off seven hits. Reusser's relief kept Carthage from scoring any more runs with three hits and four strikeouts.
Mount Union will next play Concordia (Ill.) and Ursinus (Pa.) at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Hancock Park on Thursday, March 8.
