Softball: Raiders Split With Muskingum at Home; Comeback Comes Up Short in Game Two

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader winning the first game 7-5 and dropping the second 13-11 Friday at 23rd Street Field.

With the split Mount Union goes to 9-13 overall and 2-4 in the OAC while Muskingum 17-5 and 3-3 in the conference. 

Game one saw Hannah Reusser (Minerva) get the complete game win as she moves to 7-5 on the year as she gave up five runs, three of them earned, with five strikeouts and just six hits. Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) led the Raider offense as she went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in.

The Purple Raiders jumped on Muskingum starting pitcher Rachel Eberling (7-3) in the first as Baitt and Brooklyn Hellman (Canton/Jackson) came around to score on an Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) double to put the Raiders up 2-0.

Muskingum took the lead with three runs in the top of the second off of two hits with two more fielders' choices. Mount Union battled back scoring two in the second to regain the lead at 4-3 when Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch) scored on Baitt's second hit of the game and Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne) scored on a Hellman fielder's choice.

Mount added insurance runs in the third, fourth and sixth to gain a 7-3 edge. Muskingum mustered two runs in the seventh but Reusser's fifth strikeout ended the game.

After a scoreless first inning, Muskingum jumped on Mount Union starting pitcher Jordan Tull (1-5) (Brewster/Fairless) as they scored four runs in the second inning off of six hits. The Muskies added three more to extend their lead to 7-0 off five more hits. 

The Raiders got on the board with four runs in the fourth inning off of Muskingum starting pitcher Hannah Duff (9-2). Goldy doubled to score Alex French (Rocky River/Magnificat) to get the inning started while Jordan Kramer (Mentor) singled home Pidgeon and Goldy. Baitt added her fifth hit of the day as she scored Kramer to end the scoring in the fourth.

Muskingum added four runs in the fifth off of a three run homerun from Haylea Debolt and a solo home run from Rachel Eberling to extend their lead to 11-4. 

Cheyenne Miller (Salem/West Branch) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Raider deficit to 11-5.

Muskingum added two insurance runs in the sixth to make the score 13-5 when Mount Union attempted to mount the comeback. 

With the bases loaded, Hellman and Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) both walked to score runs and Baitt scored n a wild pitch to make the score 13-8. Miller ripped a double to score French and Hellman to make the score 13-10 heading to the seventh.

After Jenna Liles retired the side in the seventh, Pidgeon led off by getting hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 13-11. However, the comeback came up short as Baitt lined out to short.

Next up for the Raiders is a doubleheader matchup with OAC foe Ohio Northern on Sunday, April 8 with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m.
