MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split a pair games in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Marietta (13-13, 5-5 OAC) Wednesday afternoon.
In game one against the Pioneers, the Purple Raiders (10-16, 3-7 OAC) struck first in the top of the second inning with an RBI double from Savannah Miner (Louisville/Louisville), scoring Cheyenne Miller (Salem/West Branch) who was previously on base with a double of her own.
Marietta went on to go on a scoring surge in the bottom half of the inning with eight runs on nine hits to take the lead at 8-1, before etching in another run in the bottom of the third to make it 9-1.
Mount Union went scoreless through two innings before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth from a combination of an RBI single from Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi), a sacrifice fly from Maggie Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and an RBI single from Miller; Raiders still trailing 9-4.
A pair of doubles and single in the final two innings scored three runs for Marietta, as they won the first game in six inning 12-4.
After five innings pitched, Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) receieved the loss, evening her record to 7-7 as she allowed 12 runs on 15 hits.
Game two got off to a slow start, as the score would stand at zero through three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, a three-run homer and an RBI double gave Marietta the lead at 3-0.
Leading off in the top of the fifth, Dominick crushed a solo home run to left field to get Mount Union on the board. Jenna Liles (Streling/Norwayne) followed up with an RBI double to score Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch), making it 3-2. Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) and Miner chimed in with back-to-back singles to drive in two more runs to take the lead at 4-3. With her second at bat of the inning, a single from Dominick sent Miner home before the inning came to an end with Mount Union now leading 5-3.
Mount Union's lead was cut short as Marietta responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 5-5.
Returning in the top of the sixth, Miner hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Liles to make it 7-5. Three batters later, Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) also sends a ball over the home run fence in center field with two runners on, driving Mount Union's lead to 10-5.
In the bottoms of the sixth and seventh inning, Marietta was able to squeeze in three more runs to cut the defecit to 10-8 but could not pull ahead as they left two on base to end the seventh inning; Mount Union winning 10-8.
Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless), with her eighth start in the circle, pitched three innings while allowing three runs on five hits before being relieved by Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville). Vansickle would receieve the win, making her record 1-1, in three innings pitched while giving up five runs on eight hits.
Reusser also made an appearance in game two, getting her second save of the season, with one inning pitched and giving up just two hits.
Returning to Alliance, Mount Union begins a three-game home stand, starting with Heidelberg on Saturday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m.
