LEESBURG, Fla. -- Mount Union's softball team came back to win, 8-7, in eight innings against Marywood (Pa.) for a split on the day after losing to Scranton (Pa.) in game one, 3-0.
The Purple Raiders (3-3) and Marywood (0-1) went three-up, three-down for three and a half innings before an untimely error sent six unearned runs across the plate for Marywood in the bottom of the fourth. Mount Union started its comeback with two outs in the top of the fifth as Brooklyn Hellman (Canton/Massillon Jackson) drove in two runs on a triple to center field to cut the deficit to 6-2 but Marywood added another run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 7-2.
The Raiders rally continued in the sixth with five runs to tie the game as Montana Martin (Massillon/Tuslaw) sent Alexis French (Rocky River/Magnificat) home on an RBI single, Maggie Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) had a two-run single along with a sacrifice fly by Anna Saxton (Boardman).
Marywood stranded a runner in the bottom of the sixth and neither team scored in the seventh sending the game to the eighth and the international tie breaker -- which puts a runner on second to start the inning for each team.
Mount Union started the eighth with Saxton on second and she advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hellman and scored on the throw to first after Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) reached via error. Marywood's runner advanced to third on a wild pitch but a fly-out to center and a pair of strikeouts thrown by Peyton Morrison (Canton/GlenOak) sealed the game for the Raiders.
Morrison receives her first win of the season, making her 1-2, with 4.1 innings pitched while allowing a run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts after coming in to relieve Ashley Cascio (Elyria/Elyria Catholic).
Earlier in the day, Mount Union faced Scranton (4-1) scored all three runs in the top of the third inning on an error and a groundout RBI. Emily Hume (Minerva) and Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) both went 1-for-3 at the plate, Riley with a double, but it would not be enough to get any runs on the board.
Alexandra Pasco (Wadsworth/Highland) had four strikeouts on the day in her first complete game but would receive the loss, making her 2-1.
The Raiders continue their Florida campaign Tuesday, March 12 against Concordia Chicago at 9:00 a.m. and Franklin and Marshall (Pa.) at 11:15 at Hancock Park in Clermont.
