MINNEOLA, Fla. -- With their first sweep of the season, Mount Union's softball team improves to 6-4 with a pair of shutouts against Wesleyan (Conn.) and Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at Minneola Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders defeated Wesleyan (0-2) by a score of 4-0. With nine hits, the Raiders received RBIs from Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi), Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) and Montana Martin (Massillon/Tuslaw).
Riley brought in two runs with a double in the first inning and after reaching base via fielder's choice which sent Brooklyn Hellman (Massillon/Jackson) home in the fifth. Goldy also hit for a double that brought Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch) across the plate. Martin's single to single to left field in the fifth scored Riley, totaling to four runs in the game.
Alexandra Pasco (Wadworth/Highland) pitched her third complete game and would receive the win, improving to 4-1. With 27 batters faced, Pasco recorded a season-best 10 strikeouts with just two walks while allowing only three hits.
In game two against Nebraska Wesleyan (6-4), Mount Union won 10-0 and ended the game in the fifth inning; the inning in which all 10 runs were scored.
The Raiders started the inning by loading the bases with its first three batters. After the first out was recorded, Hellman singled to center field which brought Pidgeon in for the first run. Emily Hume (Minerva) lined out out to left center for a bases-clearing triple to push the score to 4-0 with still only one out. Goldy hit a grounder hard to the shortstop but reached first base on an overthrown ball which resulted in Hume hitting the gas and scoring another run.
Despite having two outs, Mount Union's offense was not finished as Maggie Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) hit a shot over the left field fence for a grand slam, her first home run of the season and a 9-0 lead for the Raiders. Hellman returned to the plate for her second at-bat of the inning and hit a single through the left side, scoring Mount Union's 10th run. Nebraska Wesleyan could not get on the board in the bottom half the inning, resulting in a five inning ending.
Peyton Morrison (Canton/GlenOak) improves to 2-2 after four innings of work, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts.
Mount Union returns to Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. Thursday, March 14 for a late-afternoon doubleheader against Carroll (Wis.) at 3:45 p.m. and Southern Maine at 6 p.m.
