COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mount Union's softball team ended the season with an Ohio Athletic Conference sweep at Capital (10-28, 2-14 in the OAC) 2-1 and 11-6 Saturday at Clowson Field.
Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) and Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) each tallied four combined hits while Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) registered three hits and drove in two runs in game two to highlight the Purple Raider offense.
It was a scoreless game until the seventh inning of game one when Morgan Riley (Charleroi) hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Capital responded in the bottom frame to knot the game back at 1.
A Capital throwing error allowed Savannah Miner (Louisville) to score and gave the Raiders the 2-1 lead in the eighth.
Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) pitched all 8.0 innings only allowing one earned run and shut the door on a Crusaders comeback to collect the 2-1 victory.
In game two, Mount Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame before adding to their lead in the second with a solo home run by Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) to make it 3-0.
The Raiders plated three runs in the third sparked by a two-RBI double from Natalie Martin (Millersburg / West Holmes) to make the score 6-0.
Back-to-back homers from Dominick and Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) extended the lead to 9-0.
Capital fought back scoring four runs over the fourth and fifth innings to cut the margin to 9-4.
Mount Union got a run back in the sixth with an RBI single from Goldy to shift the score to 10-4. The Crusaders retaliated with a lone run in the bottom frame making it 10-5.
The Raiders added an insurance run in the seventh before Capital tacked on a run in the bottom half but the rally stopped there as Mount Union went on to the 11-6 victory.
Mount Union ends the season on an nine-game win streak finishing with a 23-15 overall record and 9-9 in conference play.
