CLERMONT, Fla. - Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games in their season opening day at The Spring Games at Legends Way field.
The Purple Raiders (1-1) dropped the first game 8-4 to Bridgewater (Va.) and rallied late to defeat No. 23 Trine 4-2.
In game one, Bridgewater (Va.) (10-3) jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four innings and despite putting up three runs and holding the Eagles scoreless in innings five and six it would not be enough to cut the deficit. Freshman Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) recorded two hits and two RBIs to lead the Mount Union offense. Also driving in runs was junior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic).
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Rose (Madison) (0-1) started the game and threw two innings for four runs on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Against No. 23 Trine (6-3), both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Trine took the first lead with two scored runs in the top of the fifth, but Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) would hit a double to score Savannah Miner (Louisville) to cut the Thunder's lead down to one. Junior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) recorded a single to score freshman Taylor Gerback (Louisville / Marlington) to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat) hit a sacrfice fly to score both Rose and Goldy for the 4-2 lead. The Raider defense held Trine scorless in the top of the seventh, winning 4-2.
In the circle, sophomore Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) (1-0) earned her first win pitching all seven innings for two run on eight hits with two stikeouts and two walks.
Mount Union continues play tomorrow in the Clermont Florida with games against Cornelle College and Carroll (Wis.) at 9 and 11:15 a.m.
