Softball: Raiders Split on Day Two of The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Mount Union softball team split a pair of games on day two of The Spring Games in Florida at the Legends Way Ball Fields.

The Purple Raiders (2-2) defeated Cornell College (1-2) 21-9 then fell to Carroll (4-1) 1-0. 

Against Cornell College, Mount Union jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first three innings. The Rams fought back scoring seven runs in the fourth inning but it wouldn't be enough as the Raiders scored nine more runs in the final two innings. Nine different Raiders recorded hits in the 21-9 win, but freshman Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) led the offense with three hits, four runs, and three RBIs. Juniors Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) and Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) both drove in three runs each to contribute to the win. 

In her college pitching debut, freshman Emily Ungrady (Kirtland) earned her first win pitching 3.1 innings with five strikeouts and zero walks.

In game two, Carroll scored one run in the first inning taking an early 1-0 lead. Mount Union was unable to score and lost the game 1-0. Juniors Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat), Savannah Miner (Louisville), and sophomore Alyssa Rose (Madison) all recorded one hit to lead the Raider offense. 

Sophomore Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) took her first loss of the season pitching all seven innings for one run off seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Mount Union continues play Sunday March 7 taking on Suffolk and Ursinus (Pa.) at 9 and 11:15 a.m in Clermont, Fla.
