Women's Basketball Looks to Generate Some Excitement

There is a lot of excitement at Mount Union with the opening of The McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC), a 17-million dollar expansion of remodel of the indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

That excitement also translates to the basketball court as Suzy Venet enters her fifth season as head coach at Mount Union with her most experienced and deepest roster to date with the return of four starters and seven letterwinners from a team that had its highest win total in nine years last season.

Tessa Pohovey is lone senior on the roster and one of the four returning starters as she was an All-OAC Second Team selection a year ago who averaged 11 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Sophomores Amanda Rose and Kori Wiedt along with junior Katie Crider are the other returning starters. Rose led the team in steals and rebounds, Wiedt hit 43-percent of her three-pointers and led the team in assists on her way to All-OAC honorable mention honors, while
Crider hit 41 three pointers.

Juniors Lauren Forquer and Taylor Hartung along with sophomore Chanel Simpson are the other returning letterwinners as each of them played in at least 21 games last season and give needed depth and experience in the Raiders high-paced system.

Freshmen Tierney Allen, Brittany Kilgore, Rosa LaMattina, Maggie Miller, Kahle Pelles and Jenna Vermilya are part of a talented group of newcomers looking to contribute. The Raiders will have to get things together on the road to start the season as they play eight of their first 11 games away from home.

The season starts Monday, Nov. 16 at Westminster (PA).
