#6 Women's Basketball Hosts Bethany (W.Va.) in Home Opener
Nationally-ranked Mount Union (#6 in D3hoops.com and ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches polls) hosts Bethany (W.Va.) in its home opener Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The first 500 fans will be able to pick up a schedule magnet.
Mount Union is 2-0 and enters the game with a non-conference win streak of 25 games dating back to the 2008-09 season.
The Purple Raiders wins last weekend came against No. 5 ranked Illinois Wesleyan, 73-68 and Manchester (Ind.), 66-50.
All-American senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) picked up right where she left off a year ago as she averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game to pick-up tournament MVP honors.
Fellow senior Marybeth Leitch (Rocky River/Rocky River) made her first two career starts and averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to garner all-tournament honors.
Another senior that opened solid was guard Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) who leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game.
Bethany is 0-2 to start the season after a pair of losses at the Wilmington Tip-Off Tournament. The Bison lost 59-42 to fellow Ohio Athletic Conference member Wilmington then a 67-51 loss to Denison.
Junior wing Taylor Verrico leads Bethany with 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Mount Union goes back on the road this weekend playing Saturday at 1 pm at Waynesburg (Pa.).
COACHES
Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 134-63 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 145-79.
Rebecca Upton (Westminster, Pa. '00) is 94-120 in her eighth season at Bethany. The Bison enjoyed their best season under Upton in 2011-12. In addition to winning 17 games and reaching the PAC Tournament semifinals, Bethany earned a bid to the ECAC Tournament, the program's first postseason appearance since 2004.
