GAME PREVIEW: Women's Basketball Host Rival John Carroll In OAC Home Opener Wednesday Night

No. 2 ranked Mount Union plays at home this Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 pm in Alliance, Ohio against John Carroll University at the MAAC.

Mount Union is 5-0 and enters the game with a non-conference regular season win streak of 27 games dating back to the 2008-09 season.

The Purple Raiders are coming off a 72-69 OT win at Denison last Wednesday as the senior guard Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) led the way.

LaMattina tied a career high of 27 points, five steals and six assists.

Junior Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) and sophomore Aly Daniel (Williard/Williard) also scored 10 apiece off the bench for the Raiders.

On the season, LaMattina leads the Raiders with averages 17.4 points, 4.6 assists and 3.6 steals per game.

Tierney Allen (Alliance/ Alliance) is hauling down a stout 8.8 rebounds per game to lead the squad.

John Carroll (5-0) comes into the game Wednesday after a win over Carnegie Mellon University 70-54 on Dec. 1.

The Blue Streaks are averaging 75.4 points per game and allowing 66.8 per game.

John Carroll is led by junior forward Melissa Spahar, who averages 19.6 points and 11 rebounds per game while freshman guard Erin Mog is second in scoring averaging 14.8 with 5.4 assists per game.

Mount Union travels to Tiffin, Ohio to face Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg Saturday Dec. 8 at 3:00 pm.

THE SERIES

This will be the 63rd meeting between the teams since 1975 with Mount Union holding a 37-25 lead in the series. The Raiders have won six of the last seven meetings between the teams including a 82-54 win in the 2011-2012 season.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 137-63 in her eighth season at her Alma mater.  Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader.  As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.  She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012.  She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.).  Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 145-79.

Krisite Maravalli (Susquehanna Univeristy, Pa. '93) is 137-189 in her 13th season at John Carroll. Maravalli has been improving the Blue Streaks program after inheriting a team that only won six games in 1998-1999. The Blue Streaks went to their first OAC tournament championship game in 2010-2011, losing to the Purple Raiders 92-84 at the MAAC.
