GAME PREVIEW: No. 24 Ranked Women’s Basketball Hosts Marietta Wednesday

No. 24 ranked Mount Union hosts Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup Wednesday Jan. 9 at 7:30 pm in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (10-3, 4-2 OAC) are coming off a 62-45 loss at No. 12 Ohio Northern last Saturday in Ada, Ohio as freshman Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) led the way with 10 points.

On the season, the Raiders are led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake), who averages 16.9 points per game.

Marietta (6-7, 1-5 OAC) comes into the game with five-straight conference losses including a 66-38 defeat to Baldwin Wallace this past Saturday.

The Pioneers are led by a pair of sophomore forwards in Heather Booth and Candice Alexander who average 11.0 and 10.3 points per game respectively.

Mount Union stays home to face Wilmington in an OAC game Saturday at 3 pm at The MAAC.

THE SERIES

This is the 64th meeting between the teams with Mount Union holding a 42-21 lead in the series. Mount Union has won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams with the only loss coming in the 2010-11 campaign at Marietta, 73-69.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 142-66 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 153-82.

Stacia Shrider (Baldwin Wallace '08) is in her first season as the head basketball coach. She served as the assistant coach the past two seasons at Marietta. The Marietta native returns home after being a four-year letter winner and two-year captain at Baldwin Wallace. In her career, the Yellow Jackets won over 90 games and advanced to the Elite 8 in 2005.
