GAME PREVIEW: No. 21 ranked Mount Union Host Heidelberg

No. 21 ranked Mount Union to host Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday Jan. 19 at 3:00 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The game will be broadcast on the radio on WRMU 91.1 FM and simulcast online with LIVE STATS right here.

Mount Union is 13-3, 7-2 OAC and is coming off a 72-57 win in New Concord, Ohio against Muskingum in an OAC matchup last Wednesday as the Purple Raiders were led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) with the a team-high 15 points.

Senior Marybeth Letich (Rocky River/Rocky River) would pitch in the victory with 10 points eight rebounds as senior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) would put up eight points eight rebounds.

Heidelberg (5-11, 1-8 OAC) comes into the game Saturday after a loss to Baldwin Wallace in Berea, Ohio 94-59 on Jan. 16, dropping six-straight OAC games.

Heidelberg is led by junior Kathleen Phillips, who averages 18.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Heidelberg was led by senior Jordan Ickes in the loss to Baldwin Wallace as she put up a game-high 16 points.

Mount Union travels to University Heights, Ohio to take on John Carroll in an OAC game Wednesday Jan. 23 at 7:30 pm.

THE SERIES

This will be the 61st meeting between the teams with the Raiders holding the lead 31-29. Mount Union has won 12-straight meetings between the two teams with Heidelberg last winning December 9, 2006 – 68-60 in Tiffin. Previously this season, Mount Union traveled to Tiffin and beat the Student Princes 84-63, making the record against Heidelberg 14-1 under the direction of head coach, Suzy Venet, dating back to the 2005-06 campaign.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 145-66 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 156-82.

Marcie Alberts (Ohio State '99) in her 5th season at Heidelberg University. Alberts was named the eighth head coach in Heidelberg's women's basketball program history dating back to 1966. The Student Princes finished last season with a record of 4-21, 1-17 OAC. Alberts came to Heidelberg after a successful career at Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio, posting a 117-45 record in seven seasons. The Wooster, Ohio native was a four-year letter winner at Ohio State University where she earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors. After Ohio State, Alberts played one season with the Cleveland Rockers of the WNBA.
