GAME PREVIEW -- No. 20 Women’s Basketball Host Capital Saturday

No. 20 ranked Mount Union hosts Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday Jan. 26 at 2:00 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

ADMISSION TO THE GAME WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE. In lieu of admission, donations will be accepted for the Hoops for the Cure Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. 

The game will be broadcast on the radio on WRMU 91.1 FM and simulcast online LIVE STATS while also being shown on television via tape delay on WIVM Ch. 39 (Canton) on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. and SportsTime Ohio on Sunday at 12 p.m. 

During the women's game there will be a halftime performance by the Dynamic Dribblers from Southeast Local Schools.

Mount Union is 14-3, 8-2 OAC and is coming off a 71-62 win at John Carroll last Wednesday in University Heights as junior Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) came off the bench and scored 15 points to lead the Raiders.

The Raiders had three other double-digit scorers, senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake), freshman duo Jessie Baldridge (Mount Gilead/Mount Gilead) and Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) with 11, 12 and 13 points respectively.

On the season, the Raiders are led by LaMattina who averages 16.8 points and 4.6 assists per game.

Capital (13-5, 8-3 OAC) comes into the game Saturday after a win at Heidelberg 76-61 last Wednesday.

The Crusaders are led by senior forward Stacy Timmerman with 13.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Mount Union goes on the road to Berea, Ohio January 30th to face Baldwin Wallace in an OAC women's basketball matchup at 7:30pm.

THE SERIES

Mount Union holds a 10-9 lead in the series dating back to the 2005-06 campaign. Earlier this season the Crusaders beat the Raiders in Columbus, Ohio 59-57. The last Crusaders win came in the 2009-10 campaign when they won in Columbus, 66-64, before getting swept two straight years by Mount Union.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 147-66 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 158-82.

Dixie Jeffers is 566-164 in her 27th season at Capital. Jeffers has won nearly 80 percent of her games with over 600 wins to her name, 566 coming from Capital and 52 coming from her three year stint at Rio Grande (Ohio) when she posted 52-21 overall record there. Jeffers is one of seven in NCAA Division III history to reach 600 wins and is the 14th fastest to the milestone in any division. The Crusaders have posted 20 or more wins in 18 seasons and crossed the 30-win plateau twice with Jeffers as coach.
