GAME PREVIEW: No. 22 Women’s Basketball To Host Muskingum Wednesday

No. 22 ranked Mount Union hosts Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup Wednesday, February 6th at 7:30 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

There will be a LIVE STATS feed and the game will be broadcast LIVE AUDIO online.

The Purple Raiders (17-4, 11-3 OAC) enter the game Wednesday after winning at Otterbein last Saturday February 2nd 62-56. The Raiders were led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) who scored game-high 29 points. Senior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) helped in the win with 14 points and senior Marybeth Leitch (Rocky River/Rocky River) led the team with six rebounds.

On the season, LaMattina averages 17.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the Raiders.

Muskingum (6-9, 1-7 OAC) comes into the game dropping the last eight of 10 OAC games including a 80-49 defeat to #7 Ohio Northern this past Saturday (Feb. 2).

The Fighting Muskies are led by senior Hannah Nelson, freshman Karen Sidwell and junior Tori Jarrett who averages 17.3, 9.8 and 9.2 points per game respectively.

Mount Union hosts Ohio Northern in an OAC game Saturday, February 9th at 3:00 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

THE SERIES

This will be the 71st meeting between the two teams with Mount Union holding a 38-32 lead in the series. Mount Union has won seven-straight meetings between the teams with the last Muskie win coming on January 24, 2009 – 76-68 in New Concord. 

EARLIER THIS SEASON

Mount Union won at Muskingum 72-57 on January 16th, LaMattina and Leitch led the way for the Raiders with 15 and 10 points respectively as the Muskies were led by Nelson who had game-high 25 points. Junior Gabbi Davis and Sidwell chipped in the loss with 13 and 11 points respectively.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 148-67 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 159-83.

Beth Fox (Bluffton '98) is 77-141 entering her ninth year as the head coach of the Muskingum basketball program. Fox won the 2008-09 Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as she directed the team to the OAC Tournament Final Four its highest league finish since the 1996-97 season. Prior to coming to Muskingum, Fox was an assistant to the women's basketball team at Bluffton for three years. She was a four-year varsity performer and a member of Bluffton's record-setting 1995-96 squad that went 16-9.
