GAME PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Goes On The Road To Marietta Wednesday

Mount Union's women's basketball team plays on the road for the final two Ohio Athletic Conference regular season games starting Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Marietta.

There will be a LIVE STATS feed, LIVE AUDIO and LIVE VIDEO for the game.

The Purple Raiders (18-5, 12-4 OAC) are coming off a 71-53 loss to No. 6 Ohio Northern last Saturday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex as the Raiders were led by senior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) who scored team-high 11 points and sophomore Aly Daniel (Willard/Willard) chipping in with 10 points.

On the season, the Raiders are led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) who averages 16.6 points per game with 4.9 assists per game.

Marietta (8-15, 3-13 OAC) comes into the game with dropping their last game Saturday afternoon to Baldwin Wallace, 79-67 in Berea, Ohio. The Pioneers were led by junior Tori Dixon and senior Krissy Rowe who each scored 14 points in the loss to BW. The sophomore duo Candice Alexander and Jessica Brogan both chipped in with 11 points and 10 points respectively.

On the season, the Pioneers are led by Dixon and Alexander who score 10.5 and 10.2 points per game respectively.

Mount Union travels on the road to face Wilmington in an OAC game Saturday, February 16th at 3 pm in Wilmington, Ohio.

THE SERIES

This is the 65th meeting between the teams with Mount Union holding a 43-21 lead in the series. Mount Union has won 13 of the last 15 meetings between the teams with the only two losses coming in the 2005-06 and the 2010-11 campaign's both at Marietta, 51-47 and 73-69 respectively.

EARLIER THIS SEASON

In the matchup earlier this season, on January 5th, the Raiders beat the Pioneers 68-35 at home. LaMattina led the Raiders in the victory with game-high 19 points, eight steals, eight rebounds and five assists as senior Marybeth Leitch (Rocky River/Rocky River) chipped in with 16 points and junior Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) had 12 points. The Pioneers were led by Dixon who scored team-high eight points.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 151-68 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 162-84.

Stacia Shrider (Baldwin Wallace '08) is in her first season as the head basketball coach. She served as the assistant coach the past two seasons at Marietta. The Marietta native returns home after being a four-year letter winner and two-year captain at Baldwin Wallace. In her career, the Yellow Jackets won over 90 games and advanced to the Elite 8 in 2006.
