GAME PREVIEW - Women's Basketball Starts Second Season Against John Carroll in Second Round of OAC Tourney

No. 3 seed Mount Union's women's basketball team hosts No. 6 seed John Carroll in the second round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday, February 19th at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex at 6 pm. 

The game will be the first half of a doubleheader as the men host an OAC Tournament game at 8 pm. 

Tickets for the games will be sold at the door and are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $3 for students and OAC students are FREE.  No passes will be accepted for the games. 

The game will be broadcast on WRMU 91.1 FM and simulcast online LIVE AUDIO with a LIVE STATS feed.

The Purple Raiders (19-6, 13-5 OAC) are coming off a win in the regular season finale last Saturday at Wilmington, 75-67.

Mount Union got 16 points from senior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) while fellow senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) chipped in with 12 points to move into second place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,587.

Senior Marybeth Leitch (Rocky River/Rocky River) grabbed team-high seven rebounds. 

On the season, LaMattina averages 16.8 points, 4.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game to lead the Raiders and enters Tuesday's contest 19 points away from being the all-time leading scorer in school history. 

John Carroll (13-12, 6-12 OAC) advanced to tonight's game after a 60-53 first round win over Marietta.

Melissa Spahar had a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds while freshman Elissa Day and sophomore Beth Switzler each chipped in with 16 points and 10 points respectively for the Streaks. 

On the season, John Carroll is led by Spahar, who averages 16.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. 

The winner advances to the semifinals Thursday, February 21st at No. 2 seed Otterbein at 7:30 pm.

OAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY 

Mount Union is making its 28th tournament appearance and has a 26-23 record with four titles in 1998, 2010, 2011 and 2012 with four runner-up finishes (1994, 1995, 1996, 2001).  Current Raider head coach Suzy Venet has been a part of all four titles -- playing as a senior on the 1998 squad and coaching the 2010, 2011 and 2012 teams.

John Carroll is making its 24th tournament appearance and has a 13-23 record. This is the Blue Streaks 12th straight trip to the quarterfinals holding a 3-8 record.

This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams in the OAC Tournament. John Carroll won the first two meetings before Mount Union had two-straight wins. The Blue Streaks picked up another win in 2002 before the Raiders took the win in the 2011 Championship game in Alliance.

THE SERIES

This will be the 65th meeting overall between the teams since 1975 with Mount Union holding a 39-25 lead in the series. The Raiders swept the regular season series with a win in Alliance on December 5th 72-52 led by Allen with a game-high 14 points and a win at John Carroll on January 23rd 71-62 led by freshman Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) with a team-high 13 points. The Blue Streaks were led by Switzler in Alliance on December 5th with team-high 13 points and were led by Spahar at home with game-high 20 points on January 23rd.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 152-69 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 163-85.

Krisite Maravalli (Susquehanna, Pa. '93) is 142-196 in her 13th season at John Carroll. Maravalli has been improving the Blue Streaks program after inheriting a team that only won six games in 1998-1999. The Blue Streaks went to their first OAC tournament championship game in 2010-2011. As player at Susquehanna she was a three-time All-Conference player who helped the team to three NCAA Division III playoff appearances (1991, 1992 and 1993).
