ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 3 seed Mount Union defeated No. 6 seed John Carroll, 82-63 in the second round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
With the win, The Purple Raiders (20-6) advance to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed Otterbein Thursday at 7:30 pm in Westerville.
The Raiders were led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) with her third career double-double, with a team-high 12 points and 11 assists. LaMattina is now seven points shy of the school's all-time scoring record.
The Streaks (14-13) were led by junior Melissa Spahar with game-high 18 points, as juniors Allison Lustig and Hilary Liwosz each had 10 points with sophomore Emily Taylor chipping in with 12 points.
John Carroll opened up the game on a 4-0 run to take the lead before Mount Union charged back to tie the game at four. The Raiders controlled the rest of the first half going up by as many as 13 points with 9:39 to play from a Bova three-pointer. The Streaks surged to cut the Raiders lead to seven as Mount Union took a 40-33 lead into the locker room.
Mount Union would never trail in the second half despite the Streaks 12-7 surge to cut the lead to two points 47-45 with 14:09 to play.
The Raiders would answer back with a 25-5 run to cap the victory with just under eight minutes to play to lead by 22 points, 72-50. Mount Union would go on to the victory with the final score 82-63.
