GAME PREVIEW –Women’s Basketball Travels To Otterbein Thursday For Semifinals In The OAC Tournament

No. 3 seed Mount Union's women's basketball team travels to No. 2 seed Otterbein for the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday, February 21st at 7:30 pm in Westerville, Ohio.

There will be a LIVE STATS feed, LIVE AUDIO and LIVE VIDEO for the game.

The Purple Raiders (20-6) are coming off a win in the second round of the OAC Tournament over No. 6 seed John Carroll, 82-63 Tuesday, February 19th at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.

The Raiders were led by senior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) with her third career double-double, 12 points and 11 assists. Senior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) and freshman Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) chipped in with 10 points apiece for Mount Union.

On the season, LaMattina leads the Raiders with 16.7 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

Otterbein (14-4) enters the game after receiving a double bye in the OAC Tournament advancing out of the first and second round. The Cardinals ended the season on a four game win streak including a 73-45 win over Heidelberg in the regular season finale Saturday, February 16th.  

The Cardinals were led by senior Hannah Day who scored game high 28 points against the Student Princes. Seniors Chelsea Cannon and Allie Leopard each scored 11 points in the Cardinals victory.

On the season, Day leads the Cardinals with 16.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.

OAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Mount Union is making its 28th tournament appearance and has a 27-23 record with four titles in 1998, 2010, 2011 and 2012 with four runner-up finishes (1994, 1995, 1996, 2001).  Current Raider head coach Suzy Venet has been a part of all four titles -- playing as a senior on the 1998 squad and coaching the 2010, 2011 and 2012 teams.

Otterbein is making its 29th tournament appearance and has a 14-28 record with one runner-up finish in 2004.

This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams in the OAC Tournament. Mount Union holds the perfect 5-0 record against Otterbein in the tournament with the last two matchups in the Raiders run to the Championship 2010 and 2011.

THE SERIES

This will be the 64th meeting between the two teams since 1984 with Mount Union holding the 35-28 lead in the series. The Raiders swept the regular season with a win in Alliance on December 15th 77-62 and on February 2nd 62-56 in Westerville. LaMattina led Mount Union with team-high 17 points at home as Day led Otterbein with game-high 23 points. LaMattina's game-high 29 points led the Raiders in the victory in Westerville as Day had team-high 24 points to lead the Cardinals. 

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 153-69 in her eighth season at her Alma mater. Venet was an All-American for the Purple Raiders and is the OAC's all-time assists leader. As head coach, the Raiders have won two OAC regular season titles, three OAC Tournament titles and made three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. She is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and was WBCA Region and D3hoops Region Coach of the Year in 2012. She was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Minnesota State-Mankato then got her first head coaching job at Manchester (Ind.). Including her season at Manchester, her career coaching record is 164-85.

Connie Richardson (Heidelberg '86) is 311-256 in her 22nd season at Otterbein. Richardson ranks as the winningest coach in women's basketball at Otterbein. Richardson is a two-time OAC Coach of the year (2001 & 2005). She led the team to its second straight 20 win season and received its highest seed in the OAC Tournament, reaching No. 3 seed three times previous to this season getting No. 2 seed.
