Women's Basketball Edged Out by Adrian in Day One of Hoops for Hope Tournament
DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to Adrian (Mich.) 75-72 in the Hoops for Hope Tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan Sunday evening at the Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio.
Mount Union (5-5) would get a career-best and game-high 20 points from sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) while fellow sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) had 19 points as the only other Purple Raider in double figures.
Adrian (6-4) had four players in double figures led by Casey Fougerousse and Lauren Rhodes, who each had 16 points.
Adrian would jump out to a 17-7 lead in the game's first eight minutes but the Raiders would then go on an 18-5 run over the next five minutes to take a 25-22 lead. Mount Union would stretch that lead to seven -- 37-30 -- before taking a 37-33 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs would open the second half on a 13-5 surge to retake the lead 43-42 on a Rhodes layup with just under 15 minutes to play.
There would be 15 lead changes over the next 13 minutes but Rhodes would make a layup with 1:50 to play to give Adrian a 69-68 lead and the Bulldogs would go 6-for-6 from the line for the remainder of the game to get the three-point win.
Mount Union plays Bethany (W.Va.) in the consolation game at 1 pm Monday. The two teams played each other earlier this season and the Raiders scored a 74-62 win in Bethany, W.Va.
