DELAWARE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team snapped a five-game skid as they defeated Bethany (W.Va) 78-54 Monday afternoon in the consolation game of the Hoops for Hope Tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Branch Rickey Arena.
Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) was named to the 2013 Hoops for Hope Tournament All-Tournament Team.
Taylor Verrico had 14 points, 12 rebounds, while Sami Schott and Gabrielle Naples would each chip in with 12 points to lead the Bison (3-6).
Bethany would open the game going on a 10 point run to take a 10-2 lead with 15:21 left in the first half. The Raiders would score 11 of the next 14 points to tie the game at 13 with 11:02 left. Bethany would come back with a 10-6 run to lead 23-19 with 6:48 left in the half before Mount Union would go on a 15-0 run to take a 34-23 lead with 4:10 left in the period. The Raiders would then take an eight-point lead -- 36-28 into the half.
Mount Union would open the second half going on a 21-8 surge -- including 7-of-11 from three-point range -- to take a 61-36 with 11:46 remaining. The Raiders would lead by as many as 28 before going on for 78-54 victory.
Mount Union (6-5) hosts Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at 3 pm on Saturday, January 4th at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
