Women's Basketball Hosts Defending Conference Champions Ohio Northern Saturday

Mount Union's women's basketball team will host defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Ohio Northern in a conference matchup Saturday at 3 pm at the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex in Alliance.

The game will be broadcast on the radio on WDPN 1310 AM and simulcast online with live stats at http://livestats.prestosports.com/mountunion/.

The Purple Raiders (7-5, 1-4 OAC) have won their last two games, defeating Bethany (W.Va) 78-52 and Capital 78-64 to claim their first conference victory.

Mount Union is ranked fifth in the conference averaging 74.6 points per game and points allowed at 65.9. The Raiders remain in the No.1 spot in the conference at defending the three-point shot as the opposition has converted just 28.3 percent of its three-point shots.

Sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) is ranked fifth in the OAC in scoring at a team-high 14.3 points per game. Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second in scoring at 8.2 points per game, tops the conference in shooting percentage (62.9-percent) and leads the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.

Ohio Northern (9-3, 2-3 OAC) is coming into the game having lost to Marietta 72-64 last weekend. The Polar Bears are in a three-way tie with Heidelberg and Marietta for fourth place in the conference standings.

The Polar Bears are sixth in the OAC in scoring at 68.9 points per game and allowing the opponent 62.9 points per game. Ohio Northern is No.1 in the conference in field goal percentage both offensively (46.1) and defensively (37.9).

Junior Jordan Kimes leads Ohio Northern in scoring at 13.1 points per game, she ranks third in rebounds in the conference averaging 8.6 rebounds per game and is second to Grippi in field goal percentage (60.6-perecent). Senior Cenzie Yoder averages 11.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds and is ninth in the conference in rebounding.

THE SERIES

Mount Union holds the all-time series record 33-31. Ohio Northern swept the Raiders last year defeating them both in Alliance and at home. Mount Union's last victory came in 2012 when they defeated the Polar Bears in the OAC Tournament Championship game 77-60 in Alliance.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 160-75 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater.  Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.  Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Michele Durand (Bluffton '88) is 117-99 in her 13th season at Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears saw their best season as they went 27-2 and were the conference regular and tournament champions. The reached their highest ranking of No. 3 and appeared in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 1988-89 season. Prior to taking over at Ohio Northern, Durand was the head coach at Bluffton for 11 years and was the school's all-time winningest coach.
