Women's Basketball Hits the Road Against Marietta Wednesday

Mount Union's women's basketball team travels to Marietta for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at 7:30 pm in Marietta.

The Purple Raiders (7-6, 1-5 OAC) have won two of their last three games after falling 60-45 to Ohio Northern last Saturday in Alliance.

Mount Union is ranked fifth in the conference averaging 72.3 points per game and points allowed at 65.5. The Raiders remain in the top spot in the conference at defending the three-point shot as the opponents only convert 28.0 percent of their three-point shots.

Mount Union is ranked fifth in the nation from behind the arc averaging 9.3 three-pointers per game.

Sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) is ranked sixth in the conference in scoring as she leads the Raiders with 13.6 points per game. Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second on the team with 8.1 points per game, tops the conference in shooting percentage (60.6-perecent) and leads the team in rebounds with 5.0 per game.

Marietta (8-5, 2-4 OAC) is tied with Muskingum in fifth place in the conference standings and come into the game having split their first two games in 2014, defeating Ohio Northern 72-64 and falling to Baldwin Wallace last Saturday 85-64.

The Pioneers are fourth in the OAC in scoring at 76.5 points per game and allowing the opposition 67.5 points per game. Marietta is No. 1 in the conference in rebounding averaging 44.5 rebounds per game.

Junior Candice Alexander leads Marietta in scoring (13.6 points per game) and rebounding (5.6 rebounds per game), and is ranked third in the conference in field goal percentage (59.3). Senior Tori Dixon averages 13.4 points per game and is ranked 10th in the conference with 5.6 rebounds per game.

THE SERIES

This is the 66th meeting in the series with Mount Union holding a 43-22 lead all-time in the series. Mount Union has won eight of the last 10 meetings but its two losses have come in two of its last three trips to Marietta.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 160-76 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Stacia Shrider (Baldwin Wallace '08) is 18-21 in her second season as head coach at Marietta. Since taking over, she has led the Pioneers to two straight OAC tournament appearances. Shrider was a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain at Baldwin Wallace, and was a member of the team that made a run to the Elite 8 in 2006.
