MARIETTA, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team claimed an Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the season over Marietta 71-60 Wednesday night in the Ban Johnson Arena.
Sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) and junior Chandler Moore (Girard, Pa./Girard) had a team-high of 14 points while sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) had 11 rebounds lead the Purple Raiders (8-6, 2-5 OAC).
Candice Alexander had 24 points and four rebounds as Jessica Brogan had 10 boards to lead the Pioneers (8-6, 2-5 OAC).
The first half action saw five ties and eight lead changes. The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Pioneers tied the game with 16:46 remaining in the half.
The Raiders then scored eight straight points to take the 11-7 lead at the 14:42 mark, before the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run to take an 13-11 lead with 12:22 left. Mount Union outscored Marietta 26-16 over the last 12 minutes of play to go into the break up 37-29.
Mount Union opened the second half going a 13-8 run making the score 50-37 with 14:03 remaining. The Raiders would take a 20 point lead, 58-38 with 11:40 remaining and again 60-40 with 9:41 left in the game.
Marietta outscored the Purple Raiders 20-11 in the final four minutes, -- but Mount Union held on for the 11-point victory, 71-60.
Mount Union travels to Wilmington for an OAC matchup at 3 PM Saturday, January 18 in Wilmington.
