Women's Basketball Travels to Wilmington Saturday

Mount Union's women's basketball team travels to Wilmington for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at 3:00 pm in Wilmington.

The Purple Raiders (8-6, 2-5 OAC) bounced back from a 60-45 loss to Ohio Northern last Saturday by defeating the Marietta Pioneers 71-60 Wednesday night in Marietta.

Mount Union is ranked fifth in the conference averaging 72.2 points per game and points allowed at 65.1.

Mount Union is ranked seventh in the nation from behind the arc averaging 8.9 three-pointers per game.

The Raiders are led by sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) who is ranked seventh in the conference in scoring and leads the team with 13.6 points per game. Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second on the team with 8.1 points per game, third in the conference in shooting percentage (58.7-perecent) and leads the team in rebounds (5.4 per game).

Wilmington (7-7, 4-3 OAC) is tied with Ohio Northern for third place in conference standings. The Quakers were successful in two of their last three games in 2014, defeating Heidelberg 80-51, and then falling to John Carroll 72-59. The Quakers returned to a winning streak of one defeating Otterbein 70-57 on Wednesday.

The Quakers are led by senior Haley Howard who is ranked fifth in the conference in scoring and leads the team (13.9 points per game). Senior Makenzie Wippel is ranked seventh in the conference and leads the Quakers grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game.

THE SERIES

This is the 29th meeting in the series with Wilmington holding a 19-9 lead all-time in the series. Mount Union has won nine of the last 10 meetings.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 161-76 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Jerry Scheve (Dayton '71) has won 400 games in his 22 years as a Wilmington Quaker. At Wilmington, Scheve has averaged more than 19 wins per season. Eleven of his 21 teams have won at least 20 games. The Lady Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years, winning eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles.
