Women's Basketball Hosts Nationally Ranked John Carroll Wednesday

The Mount Union women's basketball team hosts #23 John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (9-7, 3-6 OAC) have won two of their last three games including an 83-61 home win against Muskingum last Wednesday.

Mount Union remains is fifth in the conference in scoring (72.1 points per game) and scoring defense (64.9 points allowed per game).

The Raiders are led by sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) who is ranked third in the OAC and leads the Purple Raiders in scoring with 14.6 points per game.

Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second on the team in scoring at 8.6 points per game, third in the conference in shooting percentage (58.6) and leads the team in rebounds with 5.4 per contest.

John Carroll (13-2, 8-2 OAC) is tied with Baldwin Wallace in first place in the OAC. After starting the season 11-0, the Blue Streaks are 2-2 over their last four games including a 74-71 loss to Ohio Northern this past Sunday.

The Blue Streaks are led by the sister act of senior Missy Spahar and freshman Katlyn Spahar.

Missy sits atop the conference in scoring at 25.8 points per game and is second in rebounding at 9.6 rebounds per game.

Katlyn is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game.


John Carroll defeated Mount Union 82-64 in the OAC opener at John Carroll. Sarah Grippi and Nancy Osborne led the Raiders with nine and eight points in the loss. Missy Spahar had a game-high 32 points to lead John Carroll in the victory.


This will be the 67th meeting between the two teams with Mount Union holding the 40-26 lead in the series. 


Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 162-77 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Kelly Morrone (South Carolina '03) is 13-2 in her first season as head coach at John Carroll. Morrone was a member of the South Carolina Gamecocks that made two NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2002. She made her coaching debut in 2005 when she was named an assistant at the University of Buffalo, guiding their defense that finished second in the Mid-American Conference in field goal percentage and third in scoring defense in 2007-08. She had assistant coaching stints at four other schools, most recently at William & Mary before taking the position at John Carroll this year.


The Raiders travel to Columbus when they take on Capital at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 1 at the Capital Center.
