Women's Basketball: Mount Union Hosts Otterbein Saturday

Mount Union's women's basketball team hosts Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at 3 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders (10-10, 4-9 OAC) are tied with Marietta in sixth place in the conference and coming off a 74-53 loss to Baldwin Wallace this past Wednesday. 

Mount Union is led by sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) who is ranked third in the OAC and leads the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game.

Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 5.3 per game while fellow sophomore Colleen Kennehan (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) leads the team in assists at 2.2 per game.

Otterbein (7-13, 3-10 OAC) is in a three-way tie for eighth place and the Cardinals have lost three straight games including a 72-57 loss to Ohio Northern this past Thursday.

Three players average double figures in scoring for Otterbein led by sophomore Amariah Huck, who is fifth in the conference at 14.1 points per game.

Junior forward Tabitha Piper is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game and is the OAC's leading rebounder at 9.8 boards per game.

EARLIER THIS SEASON

Otterbein led by eight points at halftime and held on for a 58-54 win on December 14 in Westerville.  Tabitha Piper had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the win for the Cardinals while Nancy Osborne had 11 points to pace the Raiders.

THE SERIES

This will be the 66th meeting between the teams since 1984 and Mount Union holds a 35-30 lead in the series.  Otterbein has won the last two meetings but Mount Union has won seven of the last 10 meetings.

COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 163-80 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Connie Richardson (Heidelberg '86) is 319-271 in her 23rd season at Otterbein.  She led the Cardinals to the OAC Tournament title game for the second time in school history and a first-ever NCAA Tournament bid a year ago.  A two-time All-American as a player at Heidelberg, she spent three years as an assistant coach at Capital.
