Women's Basketball: Mount Union Tries to Shore Up Tournament Seeding Wednesday Against Marietta

Mount Union's women's basketball team plays Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at 7:30 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (11-12, 5-11 OAC) are tied with Muskingum for sixth place in the conference and the top six teams after this week's games are guaranteed a home game in next week's OAC Tournament.

Mount Union is coming off a 60-50 loss at Ohio Northern last Saturday as junior Aly Daniel (Willard/Willard) came off the bench to lead the Raiders with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Marietta (10-13, 4-12 OAC) is tied with Heidelberg for eighth place in the conference is fighting for a post-season spot as the top eight teams advance to next week's OAC Tournament.

The Pioneers have dropped four of its five games including an 82-59 loss to Baldwin Wallace last Saturday.

The matchup features a Marietta team that is third in the conference in scoring (73.7 points per game) against a Mount Union team that is fourth in the conference in scoring defense (66.3 points per game).

Sophomore Annie Bova (Parma/Beaumont) leads the Raiders and is tied for seventh in the conference in scoring at 13.3 points per game.

Sophomore Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) is second on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 5.1 per game, while fellow sophomore Colleen Kennehan (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) leads the team in assists at 2.1 per game.

Junior Candice Alexander leads Marietta and is the top 10 in the conference in both scoring (13.5 points per game) and rebounding (6.0 rebounds per game) while senior Tori Dixon and junior Heather Booth average 12.1 and 11.3 points per game respectively.

EARLIER THIS SEASON

After eight lead changes and five ties in the first half, Mount Union opened the second half on a 20-9 run to extend a nine point half lead to 20 points then held on for an 71-60 win on January 15 in Alliance. Annie Bova and Chandler Moore each had 14 for the Raiders while Candice Alexander had a game-high 24 for Marietta.

THE SERIES

This is the 67th meeting in the series with Mount Union holding a 44-22 lead all-time in the series and the Raiders have won nine of the last 11 meetings.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 164-82 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Stacia Shrider (Baldwin Wallace '08) is 20-28 in her second season as head coach at Marietta. Since taking over, she has led the Pioneers to two straight OAC tournament appearances. Shrider was a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain at Baldwin Wallace, and was a member of the team that made a run to the Elite 8 in 2006.
