ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team clinched a berth into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, as they defeated Marietta, 94-83 in an OAC matchup Wednesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) came off the bench with 14 points, Chandler Moore (Girard, Pa./Girard) had 11 while Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) had 10 as the other double digit scorers for Mount Union.
Marietta (10-14, 4-13 OAC) was led by Jessica Brogan who had a game-high 26 points.
In the first three minutes, the game saw three ties before Marietta would go up 11-8 with 16:38. Robyn Brown (Woodland Hills, CA./Chaminade College Prep) nailed a three at the 15:18 mark to put the Raiders up 12-11. The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the half of six, 18-12, with 12:24 left.
Mount Union responded with a 7-2 surge over the next two minutes to take a 21-20 lead with 10 minutes to play. Four three-pointers by Moore, Olivia Holt (Williamsfield/Pymatuning Valley), Turner and Reed sparked a 20-6 run by the Raiders for their largest lead of the half 15 points -- 41-26 -- with 4:48 remaining in the half.
The Pioneers cut the lead to seven with a 10-2 run to end the half as Mount Union would go into the half up 43-36.
The second half had eight ties and four lead changes, before the Pioneers saw their last lead 69-68 with 5:54 remaining. The game would see its last tie – 71-71—with 5:13 to play before Mount Union cruised to the 11 point victory – 94-83.
Mount Union closes the regualr season on Saturday against Wilmington at 3 pm and prior to the tip-off the team will recognize its seniors.
A Raiders win or a Muskingum loss gives Mount Union the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament and a home game against the No. 7 seed Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 pm at the MAAC.
