Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season at Home Against Wilmington Saturday

Mount Union's women's basketball team closes out the regular season at home when they host Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at 3 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

Four seniors -- Olivia Holt (Andover/Pymatuning Valley), Bridget Lyons (Avon Lake/Avon Lake) Megan Saunders (Lakewood/Lakewood), Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) -- will all play in their final regular season home game.

The Purple Raiders (12-12, 6-11 OAC) clinched a berth in the conference tournament defeating Marietta 94-82 at home Wednesday night. With the victory the Raiders will host a home game on Monday at 7:30 pm at the MAAC. 

Mount Union has won six of their nine home games this season including the defeat of Marietta in which five players scored in double digits.

Senior guard Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) and sophomore guard Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) each contributed 15 points to help lead the Raiders to victory.

Sophomores Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) and junior Chandler Moore (Girard, PA./Girard) also led the Raiders scoring in double digits.

Wilmington (12-12, 9-8 OAC) is in fifth place in the conference and has locked up the No. 5 seed in next week's OAC Tournament is coming off a loss to nationally ranked Ohio Northern this past Wednesday.

The Quakers are led by senior guard Haley Howard averaging 13.2 points per game and 3.9 assists per game. Makenzie Wippel also leads the Quakers averaging 12.1 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game.

EARLIER THIS SEASON 

Mount Union led 5-4 after a Grippi free throw in the first two minutes of the game, before Wilmington would go on a 10-2 run to take its biggest lead of the half, 14-7.

Mount Union recovered outscoring the Quakers 23-12 run to take a 30-26 lead with 1:31 left in the first half and would hold the lead going into halftime, 32-31.

A Wippel layup to open the second half allowed the Quakers to regain the lead.  Mount Union would tie the game three times over the next 13 minutes with the final time being 49-49 with 6:49 to play.

Wilmington would then go on a decisive 10-0 run to put the game away. 

THE SERIES

This is the 30th meeting in the series with Wilmington holding a 20-9 lead all-time in the series. Mount Union has won nine of the last 11 meetings.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 165-82 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Jerry Scheve (Dayton '71) is 440-201 in his 24th season as coach at Wilmington. Scheve's teams have averaged more than 19 wins per season with 11 teams winning at least 20 games. The Lady Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years, winning eight regular season, seven conference tournament titles and the 2004 national championship.
