Women's Basketball: Mount Union Hosts Muskingum in OAC Tournament Game Monday Night

No. 6 seed Mount Union hosts No. 7 seed Muskingum in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

Tickets will be available at the door and are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and OAC students are FREE with a valid ID.  No parent passes are accepted for OAC Tournament games.

The game will be broadcast locally on the radio on WDPN 1310 AM and simulcast online with LIVE STATS and LIVE VIDEO at http://livestats.prestosports.com/mountunion

The Purple Raiders (13-12, 7-11 OAC) has won seven of their 10 home games during the regular season including the regualr season finale this past Saturday defeating Wilmington 72-63.

Sophomore Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) had a team-high 13 points, while senior Amanda Turner (Wooster/Wooster) chipped in with nine points in the victory.

Muskingum (7-17, 5-13) fell 87-51 at Baldwin Wallace Saturday and the Muskies have dropped two-straight and five of their last seven games.

The Fighting Muskies are led by guard Tori Jarrett averaging 13.2 points pregame and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Meghan Billick leads the team and is ranked fourth in the conference averaging 7.5 rebounds per game.

The winner of this game goes on the road to play No. 3 seed and No. 24 nationally ranked Ohio Northern tomorrow (Feb. 25) at 6 pm in Ada.

The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 pm where the team on this side of the bracket will face No. 2 seed John Carroll in Cleveland.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 3 pm at the highest remaining seed and the tournament champion earns the conference's automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. 

EARLIER THIS SEASON

The teams split the two regular season meetings with each team winning on its home floor.

Mount Union never trailed and got a career-high 29-point performance from Annie Bova in an 83-61 win in Alliance on January 22.

In the second meeting February 12 in New Concord, Muskingum finished the game on an 11-4 run to get a 62-55 win.  Tori Jarrett had a game-high 19 points for the Muskies.

OAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Mount Union is making its 29th tournament appearance and has a 27-24 record with four titles in 1998, 2010, 2011 and 2012 with four runner-up finishes (1994, 1995, 1996, 2001).  Current Raider head coach Suzy Venet has been a part of all four titles -- playing as a senior on the 1998 squad and coaching the 2010, 2011 and 2012 teams.

Muskingum is making its 25th tournament appearance and has a 25-21 record with three OAC titles, their last coming in 1991. 

This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams in the OAC Tournament. Mount Union holds a 4-1 record against Muskingum in the tournament with the last two matchups in the Raiders run to the Championship 2001 and 1998.

From 1986-2004 every team in the conference made the OAC Tournament, in 2005 the top eight teams played in a three-game format and this is the second year that a staggered tournament with two-sets of byes has been used.

THE COACHES

Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 166-82 in her ninth season as head coach at her alma mater. Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. Venet was an All-American player at Mount Union during a time that included three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a second place finish in 1996.

Beth Fox (Bluffton '98) is 87-167 in her 10th season as head coach. Her 2009 squad finished third in the OAC and advanced to the OAC Tournament semifinals.  Fox was a four-year letterwinner and was inducted into the athletic Hall of Fame at Bluffton.
