Women's Basketball: Mount Union Hosts John Carroll

ALLIANCE, Ohio—Mount Union's women's basketball team hosts John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 pm.

The Purple Raiders (9-14, 5-11 OAC) snapped a five-game skid Saturday defeating Heidelberg 70-61. Mount Union is second in the conference in scoring (67.3) and leading the OAC in three-point percentage (37.7). Junior Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) is second in the OAC in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game while junior Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) is second on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg). Senior Chandler Moore (Girard, Pa./Girard) is leading the team averaging 5.2 boards per game and 2.4 assists per game.


John Carroll (20-3, 13-3 OAC) is on a two-game win streak including a 69-61 victory over Marietta Saturday. The Blue Streaks have four players averaging double figures in scoring with Katlyn Spahar scoring leading the conference with 19.4 points per game and Meghan Weber adding 11.3 points per game. Beth Switzler is leading the team in rebounds (9.3 rpg) while adding 13.1 points per game.


Mount Union trailed by one before a Moore three pointer gave the Raiders the lead—19-17--at the 11:07 mark of the first half. Six straight points for Pryor moved JCU into the lead on a 12-2 run with six minutes remaining. Back-to-back shots from behind the arc for Bova and Moore tied the game—29-29—at the 5:03 mark. In a half that saw five ties and eight lead changes, Mount Union trailed by one—35-34—going into the locker room. John Carroll opened the half on a 21-10 run to take a nine point lead—53-44—at the 11:12 mark. Five straight points for Bova cut the lead in half giving John Carroll just a four point lead with under 10 minutes left in the game. JCU went on an 8-2 run to gain a 10 point lead—61-51—with five minutes left in the game fueled by Spahars four points. The Blue Streaks would go on to defeat the Raiders 70-60.


This will be the 68th meeting between the two teams with Mount Union holding the 40-27 lead in the series.


Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is in her ninth season as head coach at Mount Union. Venet played for the Purple Raiders and holds numerous school records, including most points in a season (587 in 1997-98), most career assists (843), career triple-doubles (10) and is fifth on the all-time scoring list (1,528 points). Since taking over, she brought the Raiders back to being one of the nation's top programs, three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles, and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament including to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.

Kelly Morrone (South Carolina '03) is in her second season as head coach at John Carroll. Morrone was a member of the South Carolina Gamecocks that made two NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2002. She made her coaching debut in 2005 when she was named an assistant at the University of Buffalo, guiding their defense that finished second in the Mid-American Conference in field goal percentage and third in scoring defense in 2007-08. She had assistant coaching stints at four other schools, most recently at William & Mary before taking the position at John Carroll this year.


Mount Union hosts Wilmington in the final game of the regular season as three seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the game, Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3:00 pm at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
