Women's Basketball: Bova Career High Leads Mount Union to Home Opening Win

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union senior Annie Bova (Parma Hts./Beaumont) had a career-high 31 points to lead the women's basketball team to a 85-71 win over Elmira (N.Y.) at the M-Club Classic Friday at the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex.

Bova was 10-of-16 from the floor with five three pointers and five rebounds as the Purple Raiders never trailed in running their record to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore Bella Pecchia (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) also had 10 points and seven rebounds for Mount Union.

Elmira (0-2) got 19 points and 12 rebounds from Danielle Cleary in the loss.

Bova got things going for Mount Union midway through the first quarter as she scored five points in a 10-2 run that gave the Raiders a 16-6 lead.  Mount Union would lead by 11 at the end of frame, 25-11.

Elmira closed to within six points in the second quarter, 28-22, before Bova hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 15 points, 37-22 with 4:21 left in the half. A pair of Kelsey Scott (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) free throws right before halftime gave Mount Union its largest lead of the game, 49-32.

The Raiders increased the lead to as many as 27 points before going on to the 14 point win.

Mount Union will play Waynesburg (Pa.) -- a 73-69 winner over Case Western Reserve -- in tomorrow's 5 p.m. title game.  Elmira and Case Western Reserve will play at 3 p.m. in the consolation game.
