Women's Basketball: Mount Union Defeats OAC Opponent Otterbein Saturday

WESTERVILLE, Ohio- Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Otterbein, 76-72, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon in Westerville, Ohio.

Mount Union (6-2, 3-1 OAC) had four Purple Raiders in double-digits in scoring with senior Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) leading with the way with 14 points. Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) chipped in with 13 points, Bella Pecchia (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) tallied 11 points and five rebounds, while Abby Wemhoff (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) and Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each recorded 10 buckets.

The Cardinals (4-4, 0-3 OAC) Amariah Huck recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards.

The Purple Raiders ran out to a 5-0 lead with 7:22 left in the first quarter, including four points from Pecchia. Mount Union extended their lead by 7, 12-5, with 4:51 left in the quarter. Otterbein pulled within, 17-16, going on a 7-0 run to close the first quarter.

The Cardinals took an 18-17 lead off a layup starting the second quarter. Grippi hit back-to-back buckets to give Mount back the lead 21-18. Otterbein responded tying the game at 25-25 with 4:31 left in the quarter. Bova sank a three-pointer that would spark a 7-2 run by the Purple Raiders to lead 37-36 going into the locker room.

Shayna Panchik (Natrona Heights, Pa./St. Joseph) started off the quarter with a two point shot for Purple Raiders before the Cardinals tied the game 39-39 with 8:16 left. Grippi converted a layup and free throw with 8:04 showing on the clock as Mount Union led, 42-39. The two teams exchanged points, as the game was tied up three different times. The Cardinals closed the third quarter with the 52-51 lead.

Mount opened the fourth quarter hitting back-to-back three points from Wemhoff and Tinkey to take a 57-54 lead. The Cardinals tied the game sinking a three-pointer. The Purple Raiders went on a 5-1 run to lead 71-67 with 1:49 left in the game. The Cardinals pulled within one, 71-70 with 23 seconds left in the game, but the Purple Raiders were able to hold off the Cardinals to win 76-72.

The Purple Raiders host Defiance on Friday, December 18 for a non-conference game. Tip-off time is slated for 5 p.m.
