Women's Basketball: Tinkey Leads Fourth Quarter Rally as Mount Union Beats Muskingum

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Muskingum 79-67 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Monday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

Mount Union wins its third straight game and is now 17-6 overall and at 11-5 in the OAC is tied with Capital for second place with two games to go.  

Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) led four Purple Raiders in double figures with 18 points. Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) scored 12 of her 15 in the fourth quarter while Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) had 14 points and Abby Wemhoff (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) scored 12 points with nine rebounds.

Muskingum (5-18, 1-15 OAC) was led by Olivia Besancon with 18 points.

Muskingum ran out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter before a jumper from Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) would spark a Mount Union surge as the Raiders scored 13 of the next 20 points to tie the game at 19-19.  The game would remain tied 22-22 at the end of the first quarter.

A 7-1 Mount Union run to open the second quarter gave the Raiders a 29-23 lead at the 6:25 mark. The Muskies rallied to within a point, 32-31, with just over a minute to play before Bova scored the final six points of the quarter to make the score 38-31 going into halftime.

Muskingum rallied in the third quarter and out-scored the Raiders 23-14 for the period to retake the lead 54-52. 

Muskingum extended the lead to four points, 59-55 with just over eight minutes to play.  The Raiders then went on a 14-2 run with 12 of those points coming on four Tinkey three-pointers to make it 69-61 with 3:45 left and the Raiders went on to the nine-point win. 

Mount Union finishes the regular season with a pair of road games -- Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at John Carroll and Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wilmington.
