WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale, 67-54 at Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday in Wilmington, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders finish the regular season at 18-7 overall and 12-6 in the OAC and retain the No. 2 seed in next week's OAC Tournament thanks to Capital losing at home to Baldwin Wallace Saturday. Mount Union now gets a double-bye in the tournament and will host a semifinal game Thursday in Alliance.
Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) had 14 points and Annie Bova (Parma Hts./Beaumont) had 12 points to lead Mount Union but the Raiders shot just 30-percent (20-of-66) from the floor in the loss.
Wilmington (10-10, 7-11 OAC) got a game-high 22 points from Brittaney Jefferson while Mary Moyer had 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Quakers jumped out to a 10-2 lead as Raiders made just one of their first nine field goal attempts. Wilmington would lead 18-7 after the first quarter.
Wilmington would extend the lead to 15 points leading 32-17 at halftime.
Mount Union scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to get to within five points, 32-27, before Wilmington came back with five straight points. The Raiders again got the deficit to five as a Reed three pointer made it 37-32 with 4:22 left in the quarter. Mount Union then went on a 9-2 run with a Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) three pointer getting the lead 41-39 at the 1:06 mark. Wilmington then hit three straight free throws to lead 42-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
A Colleen Kennehan (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) three pointer gave Mount Union back the lead 44-43 with 9:19 to play. Wilmington responded with a 10-2 run to go back up seven points, 53-46 with just over six minutes left in the game. Mount Union made one last rally with five straight points to get it to 53-51 but the Quakers would finish the game on a 16-3 run as the Raiders made just one field goal over the final four minutes.
