Women's Basketball: Mount Union Hosts Capital in OAC Semifinals Thursday

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The No. 2 seeded Mount Union women's basketball team hosts No. 3 seed Capital for the semifinals in the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.  

What: Mount Union (18-7, 12-6 OAC) vs. Capital (20-6, 12-6 OAC)

When: Thursday, Feb. 25 7:30 p.m.

Game Preview:

Mount Union comes into the matchup off a 67-54 loss against Wilmington on Saturday.    

Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) had 14 points and Annie Bova (Parma Hts./Beaumont) had 12 points to lead Mount Union but the Raiders shot just 30-percent (20-of-66) from the floor in the loss.

Bova leads the team and is second in the OAC with 18.6 ppg. Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) is first in the three point percentage with 45.6 while Reed is second with 42.5. Abby Wemhoff (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) leads the team in rebounds with a total of 158 and averages 6.3 per game.

Capital is coming off a 71-64 win over Wilmington in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament. Jenna Erwin led the Crusaders with 18 points.

OAC Tournament History:

The Raiders are making their 29th OAC tournament appearance with a 27-25 record. The Raiders have won the tournament title four times—in 1998, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Capital is making its 30th OAC tournament appearance and the Crusaders have a 53-21 record in tournament games winning 10 titles.

It is the 11th meeting between the two teams in the tournament with the last being in the 2012 semifinals. Capital has won seven of the previous 10 tournament matchups but Mount Union has won the last three in a row.

Previous Meetings:  

Mount Union swept Capital in the two regular season meetings. The Raiders won 74-63 in the first meeting on Dec. 5 and defeated the Crusaders, No. 13 at the time, 57-47 on Jan. 30.

Coaches:  

Suzy Venet is in her 10th season at Mount Union and has led the Raiders three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament including making it to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.  Venet was named the OAC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by both the WBCA and D3Hoops.com in 2010 and 2012.

Dixie Jeffers is in her 30th season at Capital and has led the Crusaders to 10 OAC regular season, 10 OAC Tournament titles and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances.  Jeffers' Capital teams won national titles in 1994 and 1995 and is one of only seven NCAA Division III coaches with at least 600 wins.
