Women's Basketball: Raiders Host Baldwin Wallace in Finals of OAC Tournament

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The No. 2 seeded Mount Union's women's basketball team host No. 4 seed Baldwin Wallace in the finals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday at 3 p.m. in Alliance.  

What: Mount Union (19-7) vs. Baldwin Wallace (17-10)

When: Saturday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.     

Where: McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex- Alliance, Ohio

Game Preview:

Mount Union is 19-7 on the season and has won five of its last six games including an 81-72 win over Capital Thursday in the semifinals.    

Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) led the Raiders with a game-high of 23 points while Bella Pecchia (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) and Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) each added 12 and Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) had 10 points.

Bova leads the team and is second in the OAC in scoring at 18.7 points per game, Tinkey and Reed are the conference's top two three-point shooters at 45.5 and 42.4 percent respectively while Abby Wemhoff (Kent/Kent Roosevelt) leads the team in rebounds at 6.3 per game.

Baldwin Wallace has won three straight games after a 65-58 upset win over No. 10 in the nation and top-seeded Ohio Northern in the semfinals.

Sydney Clark led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points in the win at Northern.  On the season, Clark leads the Jackets in scoring (10.1 points per game) while Clara Lemmon tops the squad in rebounding at 7.5 per game.

The winner of the game claim's the OAC's automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.  The tournament selections will be announced Monday at 2:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.  

OAC Tournament History:

The Raiders are making their 30th OAC tournament appearance with a 28-25 record. Mount Union has won the tournament four times—in 1998, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Baldwin Wallace is making its 30th OAC Tournament appearance and the Yellow Jackets have a 40-23 record in the tournament.  BW won the tournament last year and has won the tournament six times -- 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2015

This will be the seventh meeting in the tournament between the teams and third time they have met in the title game.  The teams have split the previous six tournament meetings.

Previous Meetings:  

Mount Union lost the two regular season meetings against Baldwin Wallace. The Raiders lost the first one 53-46 on Dec. 2 and lost in overtime in the second meeting, 61-59.

Coaches:  

Suzy Venet (Mount Unon' 98) is 196-106 in her 10th season at Mount Union and has led the Raiders three OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament.  Venet is a two-time OAC Coach of the Year and  in 2012 was the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. Before coming back to Mount Union, she was the head coach at Manchester (Ind.) for one season and her career head coaching record is 207-122.

Cheri Harrer (Findlay '85) is 527-196 in her 26th season at Baldwin Wallace.  She has led the Yellow Jackets to eight OAC regular season titles, six OAC Tournament titles and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.
