ALLIANCE, Ohio – No.2 seed Mount Union women's basketball team defeated the No.4 seed Baldwin Wallace, 102-96, in the championship game of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The Purple Raiders advance to the semifinal round to play No. 2 seeded John Carroll.
Mount Union (20-7) was led by Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Parma) with a game-high 24 points. Bova also earned OAC Tournament MVP, while Katie Reed scored 15 points and earned OAC All-Tournament Team honors as well.
Baldwin Wallace (17-11) was led by Mackenzie Colombo (21) and Sydney Clark (10). Colombo was also namedto the OAC All-Tourament team.
In the first quarter, BW scored the first bucket of the game, but it was the Raiders who took the first extended command by leading 7-2 with 5:32 remaining in the quarter. Mount Union led by as much as 10, 12-2, in the quarter off a pair of made free throws by Reed. The Yellow Jackets surged back with a 9-0 run to come within one, 12-11. A three pointer by Tinkey gave the Raider a four point lead, 15-11, to end the quarter.
Bova opened the second quarter with a three pointer to extend the Mount Union lead to seven, 18-11. A 7-3 run gave the Raiders their biggest half of the game of 11, 25-14, off a layup by Bova with 6:08 remaining in the half. Two consecutive three pointers by BW with 3:54 remaining in the quarter, cut the lead back down to five, 27-22. A three by Reed and a layup by Kelsey Scott pushed the Mount Union lead back out to ten, 32-22, with 3:04 remaining in the half. Mount Unions never trailed in the half and led 35-26 at the break. Reed led the Raiders with 11 points at the half.
Baldwin Wallace began the third quarter of play with a 11-3 run to come within one, 38-37, off a three pointer by Colombo. Bova's offensive production started an 11-2 run which allowed the Raiders to push their lead back up to 9 with 1:10 left in the quarter. Bova scored 10 points in the third quarter alone as the Raiders led 50-39 going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Mount Union earned its biggest lead of the game of 13, 52-39, off a layup by Grippi with 8:57 remaining in the game. BW outscored the Raiders in the final quarter, but Mount Union was able to hold on to seal the victory.
Mount Union will find out their next opponent at the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball Selection show on Monday, February 29th, at 2:30 p.m.
