ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union defeated Baldwin Wallace, 67-57 in the championship game of the 2016 Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improved to 20-7 on the season, won the tournament for fifth time in school history and claimed the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships.

Mount Union was led by senior duo of Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) and Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington).  Bova had 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half on her way to OAC Tournament MVP honors while Reed scored 15 points and was also on the all-tournnament team.

Baldwin Wallace (17-11), the No. 4 seed, got 21 points from Mackenzie Colombo and 10 from Sydney Clark as both were on the all-tournament team.

In the first quarter, BW scored the first bucket of the game, but it was the Raiders who took control early with a 10-0 run to lead 12-2.  The Jackets answered with a 9-0 run of their own but a Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) three-pointer gave Mount Union a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.

Bova opened the second quarter with a three pointer to extend the Mount Union lead to seven, 18-11 and it sparked a 7-3 run to give the Raiders an 11-point lead, 25-14 with 6:08 remaining in the half. Two consecutive three pointers by BW with 3:54 remaining in the quarter, cut the lead back down to five, 27-22 then a three by Reed and a layup by Kelsey Scott (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) took the advantage back out to double digits, 32-22, with 3:04 remaining in the half. Mount Union eventually took a 35-26 lead at the break.

Baldwin Wallace began the third quarter with an 11-3 run, that included three three-pointers from Columbo -- the last of which cut the Mount Union to a point, 38-37 with 7:07 left in the quarter. The Raiders quickly scored six straight and after a pair of Colombo free throws, Bova scored six straight to end the quarter with Mount Union leading 50-39.

Mount Union went up by as many as 13 early in the fourth and BW got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

The NCAA will announce the tournament selections Monday, Feb. 29 at 2:30 p.m. online at NCAA.com.
