Women's Basketball: Mount Union Dropped By Guilford in NCAA First Round

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Mount Union suffered a 61-57 loss to Guilford (N.C.) in the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Friday at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Guilford (22-5) advances to the second round Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of a matchup between LaRoche (Pa.) and No. 1 ranked Thomas More.

Mount Union got a game-high 25 points from Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) but the Purple Raiders season ends with a 20-8 record.

Guilford had three players in double figures led by a 16-point, 10-rebound performance from Lauren Ramsey.

Mount Union ran out to an 18-8 lead in the game's first seven minutes and hit four three pointers to lead 24-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The Raiders extended the lead to 12 points, 35-23, on a Jamie Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) jumper with four minutes left in the second quarter, but the Quakers began to chip away with five straight points to make it 35-28 at halftime.

Guilford kept coming in the second half outscoring the Raiders 13-10 in a third quarter that saw a 30-minute delay for an injured Guilford player to be taken to the hospital, to cut the margin to four points, 45-41.

Guilford trailed 51-50 when Bova hit a three-pointer to give the Raiders a 54-50 lead with 4:50 to play. The Quakers then scored six straight points and a Heaven Walters free throw with 1:48 left in the game gave Guilford its first lead of the game at 56-54. The Quakers then scored five more points to make it an 11-0 run and lead 61-54 with 12 seconds left. A Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) three pointer made for the 61-57 final.
