ADA, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team was defeated by No. 19 in the country Ohio Northern 63-54 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
Senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy), junior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Redlands) and sophomore Hannah Ferguson (Columbus/Westerville North) led Mount Union (4-4, 1-2 OAC) with seven points apiece. Bartoszewicz recorded seven rebounds and Ferguson had one steal.
Ohio Northern's (8-0, 3-0 OAC) Amy Bullimore and Lindsey Black led Ohio Northern with 11 points each.
A first quarter run by Ohio Northern had the Raiders trailing by five points early in the game. Mount Union took the lead after Ferguson made two layups and senior Kelsey Scott (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) sunk a three-pointer. Sophomore Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) followed with a three-pointer of her own, while Bartoszewicz made two free-throws, giving Mount Union a seven point lead over its opponent.
The second quarter was a game of of back-and-forth play, with the lead changing six times in the span of less than seven minutes. Mount Union trailed Ohio Northern by six points at the break.
The Raiders went on an 8-2 run to tie the game after Morrissette made a layup and sophomore Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) and junior Corie Inverso (Danville/Danville) made three-point jump-shots. Mount Union trailed the nationally ranked Polar Bears by only two points at the end of the third period, but a 15-12 run by Ohio Northern in the final quarter resulted in a 63-54 loss for Mount Union.
The Purple Raiders host OAC opponent Heidelberg on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
