SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team dominated in the paint and secured a 63-40 win over non-conference opponent Brescia (Ky.) Thursday afternoon in Wittenberg's Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic Tournament.
Senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) led the Purple Raiders (6-4, 2-2 OAC) with 18 points and three rebounds, while junior Erin White (West Chester/Lakota East) recorded a team-high 11 rebounds.
From the bench, freshman Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) tallied a career-high 10 points, all of which came in the fourth quarter. She went 4-4 on free throws.
Brescia's (1-12) Kelsey Kirkpatrick led the Bearcats with four rebounds and 16 points.
Mount Union out-scored Brescia 28-12 in the paint and recorded 50 team rebounds. More than half of the Raiders' 63 points came from the bench, with 33 total.
The Raiders opened play with an early 4-2 lead at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter, which would last through the game. Although Brescia gained momentum and tied the game at 10 points late in the first period, the Bearcats weren't able to top the Raiders.
Mount Union held the Bearcats to scoring as few as four points in the second quarter, and led by as many as 27 points, 48-21, which came at the 7:20 mark in the fourth quarter after a layup by White.
Mount Union will play Wittenberg University Friday, Dec. 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
